About TLC

Tutors of Literacy in the Commonwealth (TLC) provides volunteer tutor training and materials to adult and family literacy providers in Pennsylvania. Tutors of Literacy was established in 1981 as a special interest division of the Pennsylvania Association for Adult and Continuing Education (PAACE) and currently serves over 115 programs in Pennsylvania’s 67 counties.

Adult literacy providers that receive services from TLC share a common mission of providing one-to-one and small-group Family, Adult Basic Education (ABE), and English as a Second Language (ESL) literacy instruction to adult residents of the Commonwealth. A network of trained volunteer tutors provides the necessary means of supplying this literacy instruction. Tutors of Literacy provides volunteer tutor training to those who work to address the literacy needs of Pennsylvania adults and their families. Tutor trainings are provided in the form of Basic Tutor Trainings, Basic ESL Training, and a variety of follow-up in-services.

TLC is no longer going to mail hard copies of our Literacy Connection newsletter; all issues will be mailed electronically and be available on our website. If you would like to continue receiving a hard copy, please contact Jill Blonski. Please let us know if you have a new e-mail address at which you would like to receive the electronic newsletter. Back issues of these newsletters can be found here.

Do you know what TLC can do for your volunteer literacy program?

WORKSHOPS: Workshops are presented at the site of the program’s request. They are free of charge to both ABLE and non-ABLE funded literacy agencies. The length of the adult literacy workshops ranges from twelve-hour Basic Tutor Trainings to two-hour in-services.  A list of workshops with  workshop descriptions can be found here. Tutors of Literacy in the Commonwealth, incorporated in Pennsylvania, is a 501(c)(3) non-profit educational organization.  If you are interested in supporting TLC's mission and would like to contribute to TLC's cause, please contact us. Your contribution may be tax-deductible.

Kim graduated from Penn State University with a bachelor’s degree in Wildlife and Fisheries Science and then went on to pursue her love of horses and instructing others. She was the riding director of a large facility in Virginia, where she supervised the operation of a camp serving 53 riding campers per session. She also worked for an ARC organization in Indiana, where her promotions within the company gave her the opportunity to work with the developmentally disabled in a variety of roles. She provided direct care and also created individualized habilitation plans for the clients under her supervision. She has also been able to combine her interests and become a therapeutic riding instructor. She has now returned home to Pennsylvania, and, through her position at TLC, plans to continue her goal of helping others.

Colleen Serencsits is TLC’s Trainer and Developer. Her education includes a Bachelor’s in General Science from Villanova University, a Master’s in Geology from University of Pennsylvania, and teaching certification in Earth and Space Science and in General Science from Penn State. All this interest in science and education has led her to work as teacher, research assistant, adviser, and secondary substitute teacher. With probably as much time spent volunteering as in paid employment, she has volunteered in elementary classrooms as general aide, conducting special classes such as edible plants, and arranging science and art fairs. Colleen has also volunteered with adult literacy, science competitions, and all sorts of youth sports. She grew up outside of Philadelphia, and lived in Baltimore, Easton, and Orrville, Ohio on the way to State College. Colleen looks forward to hearing from programs to set up tutor trainings, so she can continue to put her skills to use.
